Epic Theatre Company presents a gripping drama about the origins of the AIDS crisis in New York City as a small group of activists fights the government, the media, and their own community to try and stop the virus from spreading.
It’s the early 1980’s. Sexual liberation is still in full swing, but sexual identity is still a controversial topic. An insidious new disease has begun affecting gay men at a disturbing rate. Hoping to spread awareness about the growing epidemic, a number of gay men form an organization dedicated to getting the word out, but what starts out as a small undertaking quickly becomes the battle of their lives. What seems like a fight about an illness soon turns out to be a broader war involving politics, healthcare, and equality.
Presented in a stripped-down, bare bones, no frills fashion, Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart” is a fascinating look into a part of history that plays like a horror movie, and asks the question—Just how far have we come?
