Students will gain confidence in public speaking, expressing themselves using their body and voice, and facing fears of stage fright and performance anxiety. Jump in, be big and bold, laugh, and learn the basics of acting, storytelling, and improvisation. Together the class will explore, create, and rehearse pieces from beloved children’s authors, poets, and writers. No experience necessary; come one and come all. Class culminates in a performance for family and friends. (No materials required aside from your imagination.)
INTRODUCTION TO PLAYWRITING Ages 8 - 13 | Rhiannon Lynn Annin Mondays 5:30 - 7pm | $150 Each class, students will learn about a different genre of theatre, such as a musical, farce, or comedy, and write short scripts individually. The students will get to hear their writing read aloud by classmates, who will also respond to the piece. Each class will also cover one or more unique attributes of plays, such as nameless characters, anachronism, and lists, and be challenged to utilize them in their writing. The course will conclude in February with each student selecting one of his or her short scripts and expanding it into a 10-minute play.
HEIGHTENED ACTING Ages 8 - 16 | Rhiannon Lynn Annin Tuesdays 5:30 - 7pm | $150 Heightened acting is an exaggerated and dramatic presentation of movements and words on stage. In this class, students will learn to define a heightened style of acting versus realistic acting and be able to distinguish when each is appropriate. They will participate in exercises that take them out of their comfort zones and encourage them to use their bodies and voices as meaningful stage tools. Individually, students will select short monologues and will work in class to perform them in the heightened style. The course will conclude with scenes performed with partners to exemplify what they’ve learned.
DEVISING & COLLABORATION Ages 8 - 13 | Rhiannon Lynn Annin Wednesdays 5:30 - 7pm | $150 After understanding what “devised” theatre is, students will form groups of varying sizes and combinations each week to devise a performance. There will be a different theme or spark of inspiration every class. They will learn to use their varying skills while emphasizing minimalism and efficiency. Students will also learn basics of technical theatre in preparation for a final performance as one group.

Artists' Exchange offers classes for the beginning, intermediate and advanced actor that focus on "the method," which strives to make each actor understand the most honest and truthful way to create and perform their role.
Classes are available for children, teens and adults. Each class culminates in a performance, to which friends and family are invited.
Artists' Exchange produces four main stage productions per year. Students who participate in our acting classes are encouraged to audition for our productions to test their progress in an actual play.
A Note on Theater Classes Theater classes are structured in a cumulative manner, meaning students are encouraged to repeat classes and continue to learn. The instruction is student-focused and is based on objectives identified for each learner. While students are grouped by age, they learn based on what they know and how they can continue to grow.
